1. Mission Statement

The Younger Company will provide an opportunity for the Middle and Elementary students (grades 5,6,7,8) to come together to learn more about theater, onstage and backstage and to join members of the Beacon Players. In a fun and effective way to learn, perform and enjoy many elements about theater.
This exciting troupe will work closely with their fellow members (cast) to put together a spectacular show within their age category. This show will be performed after the Middle School production, rehearsals etc. will be discussed.

Members of the Younger Company  will learn basic theater techniques such as stage direction, movement, dance, vocal performance, and acting skills while fostering creativity, confidence, and teamwork.

Young performers learn the fundamental tools needed to develop their physical, vocal, and emotional range in a way that is both fun and playful, no pressure is ever applied and we will be holding non mandatory workshops which will be listed on the website and announced via THE YOUNGER COMPANY REMIND, all this will be discussed at the Younger Company Parent Meeting.

We have meetings with all of our Younger Company parents to explain outside commitments, as well as what our plans will be. We will have a Younger Company production (to be determined) cast with only our Younger Company, to be performed at the High School. The Younger Company will not compete with the Middle School program. Early on, we will be meeting once weekly as plans develop.

Mission Statement:

~ Open to all 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders, BCSD students can join the Beacon Players Younger Company and have the ability to perform in shows at no cost.
~ The ability for elementary and middle schoolers to come together and perform enables them to learn more about theater on and off stage, and provides an effective, fun way to experience theater.
~We will work with the cast and crews to put together a fantastic show within the age range of our cast, and we will work around scheduling conflicts ( RMS Drama Club, sports, dance, etc.).

We encourage all of our youth cast members to partake in all of the three sections of theater (singing, dancing, and acting), however we understand that students may not be comfortable with any one of the three sections, and we welcome and accommodate that as well!

Fame is a wonderfully flexible show in that it enables cast members to participate in the section(s) in which they wish to partake. The ensemble of Fame is divided into three smaller ensembles, as the characters in the show attend a Performing Arts school with three subdivisions:

Dance (the dance school)

Chorus (the music school)

Acting (the acting school).

Cast members are assumed to be participating in all three when you check off Ensemble, however if you wish to only participate in one or two of the sections, please indicate that on the form.

All cast members will automatically be given the opportunity to do all three, if they so choose, however if you wish to only participate in one or two of the sections, and not all three, please indicate that.

Synopsis – Set during the last years of New York City’s celebrated High School for the Performing Arts in the early 1980s, Fame JR. is the bittersweet, but ultimately inspiring, story of a diverse group of students who commit to four years of grueling artistic and academic work. With candor, humor and insight, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today.

Characters:

Nick Piazzais focused on learning the craft of “real” acting.

Serena Katz – loves the life of an artist but is equally as interested in boys, specifically Nick.

Joe (José) Vegas – is the class clown who loves performing on and offstage.

Tyrone Jackson – has talent, but he wants to use it his own way rather than conform to the school’s rules. He is constantly switching between his tough-guy persona and a young man trying to woo Iris. Tyrone is a dancer

Carmen Diaz – believes she is ready for stardom, and nothing is going to stop her. This is the role to cast your true triple threat – great actor, great singer and great dancer.

Iris Kelly – pretends she is wealthy and high-class but drops these pretenses once she feels comfortable.

Mabel Washington – enjoys performing . Mabel eventually learns to be happy with herself and her body, but not before fully experiencing the pains of being a dancer.

Schlomo Metzenbaum – is a really likable guy who tries to get along with everyone.

Grace (Lambchops) Lamb – is a drummer with a lively personality. This featured role is great for a young actress who isn’t afraid to take a few risks.

Goodman (Goody) King – is the third band member. This role is perfect for a young student just learning to be confident onstage.

Miss Esther Sherman (English Teacher) – is a powerful, strong woman who firmly believes academic subjects are the core of a solid education.

Ms. Greta Bell (Dance Teacher) – is a passionate teacher who is not afraid to push her students to reach their full artistic potential.

Mr. Myers (Acting Teacher) – is perhaps the most relaxed of the teachers, but he still demands full commitment from the students. This non-singing role is a good acting challenge for either a male or female student with good rhythm.

Mr. Sheinkopf (Music Teacher) – adds a bit of comic relief to the show but still doesn’t let up when there is work to be done. Mr. Sheinkopf doesn’t sing, but he does lead the most diCast an actor, male or female, with a solid sense of rhythm.

Individual songs do not need to be from the show, and they do not need to prepare more than 2 minutes of their piece. Each student only needs to prepare 1 song for the Friday audition.

Songs to learn for group auditions (mandatory)

  • Hard Work Part 1, measures 1-76
  • Bring On Tomorrow (Reprise)

Below is compilation of lines we would like all auditioning to to familiarize yourself with.

Although it is not a bad thing to memorize the lines, it is not required, and we will be giving you additional lines at the actual auditions:

Nick

Nick: Konstantine Stanislvasky. He founded the Moscow Arts Theater in 1897. He and his friends struggled and starved, but that was okay, because they believed in what they were doing.

Nick: I mean, think about it. Romeo and Juliet grew up in the same small town. They may have seen each other every day of their lives. But on this night, this special night…it’s as if he’s seeing her for the very first time.

Tyrone

Tyrone: Iris, you don’t know what it’s like. You look at a book and see words. When I look…I see garbage. I see noise. But thanks to Miss Sherman, that noise is starting to sound like music.

Schlomo

Schlomo: No…I mean, yeah. I mean…well, maybe you do. It’s like all this stuff about being famous all the time. Maybe you should take a break from that?

Joe

Joe: Yo! Julie baby! Have not saint’s lips, and holy palmers, too, Mamacita!?

Goody

Goody: No, no, I like girls. It’s just I get nervous when they got sticks in their hands.

Carmen

Carmen: Yo, Mr. Myers. I need to be excused from class on Friday. See, they’re doing a reveal of West Side Story. And I am like perfect for the role of Anita.

Iris

Iris: You used me, Tyrone. All those book reports I helped you with. Why didn’t you tell me you couldn’t read?

Mabel

Mabel: (mimicking) “Merci, Madame.” Who does she think she is, Pepé Le Pew?

Lambchops

Lambchops: Yeah. You got a problem with that?

Serena

Serena: The last class to graduate from this dumb, drafty, wonderful old building. I wonder what’s gonna happen to it. I wonder what’s gonna happen to us…

Serena: Me? Are you serious? Oh, my God!! You are serious! I don’t believe it! Juliet! As in “Romeo and.” My parents are gonna plotz!

Mr. Sheinkopf

Mr. Sheinkopf: Now remember, the conductor is the conduit between the pit and the stage. So keep one eye on the music and the other one me.

Mr. Meyers

Mr. Meyers: You know, Carmen, your anger could be your greatest asset. But you’ve got to make it work for you, instead of against you. If you don’t, it will eat you alive.

Ms. Bell

Ms. Bell: Classical lines, people. Imagine you’re dancing for Balanchine. Gently ladies, gently, You’re ballerinas, not ruck drivers. That’s lovely, Iris. You look like the Swan Queen. Tyrone. This is adagio, not disco.

Miss Sherman

Miss Sherman: Two things make life worth living, “to love and to work.” Here at P.A. you have the privilege of working hard at something you love. The operative words being “hard work.” For the next four years those words will own you!
